Seasonal Opening & Closing

When a homeowner calls about seasonal opening or closing, they are facing the transition between swimming season and winter storage. The pool has been sitting idle, covered, and possibly full of debris or stagnant water. They need the equipment started safely, the water balanced, and the pool made ready for use or protected from freezing temperatures.

For opening, we remove the cover, clean it, and store it. We refill the pool to the correct level, install drain plugs and return fittings, then start the pump and filter. We test the water with a Taylor test kit and add chlorine, algaecide, and stabilizer. For closing, we lower the water below the skimmer, blow out the return lines with a shop vac, add winterizing chemicals, and secure the cover with water bags or cable.

The work varies with pool size, cover type, and condition. A mesh cover lets debris through, so the water may be green and need more chemicals. A solid cover with a pump may be dry but heavy. Access matters: a long driveway or tight gate adds time. The weather affects the closing window—freezing temperatures mean lines must be blown out quickly. These factors shift the time and cost, but we quote a flat rate.

On the day, our crew arrives with the truck loaded with chemicals, a shop vac, a hose, and tools. We lay tarps to protect the deck and keep debris off the grass. After the job, we clean up all packaging, rinse any spills, and leave the area tidy. Before we arrive, the homeowner should remove any toys or floats from the pool and ensure the cover is accessible. Afterward, no action is needed—the pool is ready to swim or winterized.
